GORSE KNIVES - BLACKSMITH ALEXANDER O’NEILL PREPARES FOR WINCHESTER FOODIES FESTIVAL 2024
A blacksmith forges new bespoke kitchen knives ahead of them going on display on his stall at a food festival this weekend. The knives are forged with blanks of ‘folded steel’ a way of creating intricate patterns similar to that of damascus steel but maintaining a strong enough edge to withstand every day use.
Alexander O’Neill said, “I am in the process of preparing the knives for this weekend's Winchester Foodie Festival 2024, each one takes around 10 hours to create. I use a variety of materials in making the handles, from wooden burls, for more visually interesting grain to animal products including camel bone and buffalo horn. I began making bespoke tools at university to better help with my projects which then naturally bled into knife making later on.”
